Dr. Oxford had simply vanished. Not a single trace of him was found in the house other than the sheets he’d slept on for the past couple of days.
Greer stepped off the elevator and headed straight for the library. The three of us followed and watched as he removed a laptop from the top drawer of the desk and fired it up. He motioned for us to gather around and then pulled up a screen with four different views of the house.
“A surveillance system?” Rhom asked. “When did you install that?”
“It’s been up for a while.”
Sophia seemed unaffected, while I was horrified by the fact that our every move was being recorded. “I don’t know what to say, Greer. I feel a little violated. Have you been watching everyone in this house?” I glanced around the room for cameras but saw none.
He saw the mistrust on my face and shook his head. “This is the first time I’ve looked at the footage. I have no intention of invading anyone’s privacy.”
“Then why have it?” I asked accusingly.
“For this very reason.” He motioned to the screen. The video clearly showed the doctor leaving his bedroom and walking down the stairs, past the kitchen and out the front door, the whole time looking straight ahead as if completely oblivious to the fact that he might be seen.
“Looks like the doctor left by his own volition.” Greer said. “No foul here.”
“But why would he leave?” I asked, perplexed as to why the doctor would walk away from the safely of Greer’s house, especially after we’d rescued him from a cage in Maelcolm’s war room.
Greer shook his head. “That’s the million-dollar question.”
I looked closer at the naïve scientist walking out the front door and into the lion’s den and wondered what was going through his head. He seemed to make no effort to conceal his exit, as if it had never occurred to him that someone might try to stop him. “Am I the only one who thinks he looks a little dazed?”
Everyone in the room muttered their own suspicions.
“My guess is he’s heading for home,” Greer speculated. “Binghamton.”
The night Isabetta Falcone met us in Little Italy and told us about Dr. Oxford’s work, she gave us his home address. But we found him in his office at Cornell University before having to pay a visit to his house.
“Or he’s back at Cornell,” Leda guessed.
“I’ll send someone up there to check.” Greer shut the laptop and gave me a sympathetic look. “I’m sorry you went through all that for nothing,” he said, referring to my risky meeting with Maelcolm to negotiate the doctor’s release.
“Yeah,” Rhom added. “Oxford could have been a little more appreciative. Ungrateful bastard.”
“I appreciate that, Rhom, but he sure didn’t look right. I wonder if he even knew what he was doing when he walked out that door.”
“Anyone hungry?” Sophia broke the long silence as we all stood around the desk silently formulating our individual hypotheses as to why Dr. Oxford snapped out of his coma and just walked away.
